Two Jobs, One Crime: Mehul Goswami’s ‘Double Paycheck’ Lands Him in Legal Peril

Double Duty, Double Trouble: Indian-Origin Tech Professional in NY Faces 15 Years for Dual Job Fraud

New York:
Mehul Goswami, a 39-year-old tech professional of Indian origin, has been arrested in the United States on charges of defrauding the New York State government after allegedly holding two full-time jobs at once.

Goswami worked as a project coordinator for the New York State Office of Information Technology Services while simultaneously employed as a contractor for GlobalFoundries, a major semiconductor firm based in Malta, New York. The practice, commonly known as moonlighting, has landed him in serious legal trouble.

He now faces charges of grand larceny in the second degree, a Class C felony in New York, which carries a maximum prison sentence of up to 15 years if convicted.

Goswami appeared before Judge James A. Fauci in Malta Town Court and was released without bail as the case proceeds. Under New York’s revised bail laws, the charges are not classified as bail-eligible offences.

Inspector General Lucy Lang said in a statement, “Public employees are entrusted with the responsibility to serve with integrity, and Goswami’s alleged conduct represents a serious breach of that trust. Working a second, full-time job while claiming to be working for the State is an abuse of public resources, including taxpayer dollars.”

According to reports, Goswami earned an official annual salary of $117,891 (approximately ₹98 lakh) as a state employee. Investigators allege that between March 2022 and 2024, he was simultaneously collecting pay from both the state and GlobalFoundries, resulting in the misuse of over $50,000 in taxpayer funds.

The investigation began after an anonymous email tip-off alerted authorities that Goswami was working for a private company during hours meant for his government duties.

The case remains under investigation as Goswami awaits further court proceedings.
