Major Internet Crash: Big Names Like Amazon, Perplexity & Venmo Affected

🌐 Massive Tech Outage Disrupts Global Platforms

A major online outage on Monday caused chaos across several prominent platforms, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon.com, Prime Video, Alexa, Snapchat, Robinhood, Perplexity, and PayPal’s Venmo, according to data from outage tracker Downdetector.

⚠️ Major Outage Hits Global Platforms

The widespread disruption left millions of users unable to access key services across multiple regions.
Early reports suggest the issue originated from Amazon Web Services (AWS) — a backbone of modern internet infrastructure powering thousands of online services.

🧠 Perplexity CEO Confirms AWS at the Core of Outage

Perplexity’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas, confirmed that the company’s downtime was directly linked to problems within Amazon’s cloud infrastructure.

“Perplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue. We’re working on resolving it,” Srinivas posted on X (formerly Twitter).

As one of the world’s largest cloud computing providers, AWS’s technical failures can trigger ripple effects across the entire digital ecosystem — and Monday’s outage proved just that.

⚙️ Amazon Confirms Issues in US-EAST-1 Region

Amazon later acknowledged that AWS suffered a major disruption in its US-EAST-1 region, one of its largest and most critical data hubs.
The company reported “increased error rates and latencies” affecting multiple services and said teams were working to restore normal operations, though no specific recovery timeline was provided.

In the United States, the outage peaked around 1:04 PM IST, with over 15,000 users reporting problems.

  • 50% faced issues on the mobile app

  • 29% had trouble with the homepage

  • 21% encountered shopping cart errors

💳 Impact on Amazon, Venmo, and Other Platforms

Downdetector reported that Amazon.com, Prime Video, and Alexa were among the affected services.
Payments platform Venmo, operated by PayPal, also confirmed users were experiencing transaction delays and access issues.

Meanwhile, Snapchat saw over 22,000 reports of outages around 1:10 PM IST, with:

  • 58% struggling to access the app

  • 38% facing server connection problems

  • 3% reporting website issues

🔄 What Happens Next?

As AWS engineers work to stabilize the system, the outage serves as a stark reminder of how interconnected the digital world has become — and how one malfunction in a cloud data center can send shockwaves across multiple industries and millions of users.
