đź’” “Raped 4 Times by Relative”: Maharashtra Doctor’s Suicide Sparks Outrage and Political Storm
A 29-year-old woman doctor working at a government hospital in Maharashtra’s Satara district tragically died by suicide after allegedly being raped by a sub-inspector and facing months of mental and physical harassment by another man — her landlord’s son.
The doctor was found hanging inside a hotel room in Phaltan on Thursday night, October 23. A note written on her palm in Marathi — accessed by Hindustan Times — revealed shocking details. In the note, she claimed that she had been raped four times by Gopal Badane, a sub-inspector at Phaltan City police station and her relative.
Authorities have confirmed that Badane has been suspended, and another accused, Prashant Bankar — the landlord’s son — was arrested on Saturday. Both men have been booked for rape and abetment to suicide, and the victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
đź’¬ Victim Was Pressured to Falsify Medical Reports
The doctor’s cousin alleged that she had been pressured to issue fake “fit/unfit” medical certificates for certain people arrested by police and to falsify post-mortem reports. Her refusal to comply reportedly led to continued harassment and threats.
“She had complained against three cops earlier this year,” the cousin said, “including the one who later assaulted her.”
However, a senior Satara police official denied these allegations, saying her earlier complaint was “related to a different issue.”
📱 Last Texts Before Death
Before taking her life, the doctor reportedly exchanged text messages with Bankar, one of the accused. Police have launched a manhunt for the absconding sub-inspector.
⚖️ Political Uproar
The case has triggered a political storm in Maharashtra.
Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant accused the Fadnavis-led Mahayuti government of “failing to protect women,” while Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed police to take strict action against the accused and ensure a transparent investigation.
