🚘 Lokpal’s BMW Demand Triggers Massive Outrage Nationwide
A major controversy has erupted over a public tender floated by the Lokpal of India seeking to acquire seven luxury BMW 330Li (Long Wheel Base) vehicles. The tender notice, dated October 16, invites bids from reputed agencies for the supply of the high-end cars, each costing over ₹60 lakh.
According to the notice, the bid submission window opened on October 17 and will close on November 6 at 3 PM, with evaluation beginning the next day. The Lokpal has demanded delivery within 30 days, stating that “no extension of time will be given.”
🚗 Training Drivers — At Vendor’s Expense
Interestingly, the tender also mandates a seven-day training programme for drivers and designated staff members. This training must include both classroom and on-road sessions, to be completed within 15 days of car delivery.
All associated costs — including trainer fees, accommodation, and logistics — must be borne entirely by the vendor, the notice specifies.
💬 Outrage Erupts Over “Luxury for the Watchdog”
The Lokpal’s demand has sparked massive outrage on social media, with several activists and political leaders questioning the move.
Activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan slammed the decision, writing on X:
“The institution of Lokpal has been ground to dust by the Modi govt... They are now buying 70L BMW cars for themselves!”
Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed also criticised the Lokpal, calling the move “a betrayal of the anti-corruption movement” that led to its creation.
“Lokpal wants to buy 7 luxury BMW cars worth ₹5 crore for itself. This was supposed to be an institution against corruption — not a symbol of it,” she wrote.
⚡ Public Perception: From Watchdog to Luxury Seeker
The tender has reignited debates about transparency and accountability within institutions meant to fight corruption. Many argue that the move reflects a disconnect between the Lokpal’s purpose and its current priorities.
