Trump’s High Praise for Asim Munir — Then an Awkward ‘India’ Question for Pak PM
“My favourite Field Marshal,” says Trump as he lauds Pakistan’s role in Gaza peace talks
At the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit in Egypt, US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir, calling him his “favourite Field Marshal,” and thanked both him and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for their efforts in helping to broker peace in Gaza.
Trump Turns Toward Sharif: “Pakistan and India Will Live Nicely Together, Right?”
As the visibly uneasy Pakistani PM stood behind him, Trump’s tone shifted to diplomacy — and a touch of humor.
Moments after complimenting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very good friend who’s done a fantastic job,” Trump turned to Sharif and asked, “I think that Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together, right?”
Caught off guard, Sharif managed a nervous smile as Trump continued, “They are… two great leaders as far as I’m concerned.”
Sharif Thanks Trump for ‘Stopping India-Pak War’
Taking the stage later, PM Shehbaz Sharif thanked Trump for “saving millions of lives” by preventing a war between India and Pakistan earlier this year.
He even went a step further — renominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him for “bringing peace to South Asia and now to the Middle East.”
Pakistan Credits Trump, India Credits Its Military Diplomacy
Islamabad has repeatedly supported Trump’s claim of ending the India-Pakistan conflict in May, following Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strike after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.
However, India maintains that the ceasefire understanding was achieved through direct talks between the DGMOs of both militaries — not due to external mediation.
From Gaza to South Asia: Trump’s Diplomatic Spotlight Shifts
Trump’s comments, balancing praise for both India and Pakistan, have reignited debate over his diplomatic theatrics — mixing charm, surprise, and showmanship on the global stage.
