NCERT Revamps Science Syllabus: Ayurveda to Be Taught in Classes 6–8
In a major move reshaping school education, NCERT has decided to include Ayurveda-based chapters in the science syllabus for Classes 6 to 8. This initiative aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes integrating India’s traditional knowledge systems into modern education.
Ayurveda Joins the Classroom
Students will now learn about health, nutrition, and environmental balance from an Indian scientific perspective.
According to NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani, the aim is to help students gain not only scientific understanding but also awareness of physical and mental well-being principles drawn from Ayurveda.
What’s New in the NCERT Science Books?
-
Class 6 textbooks now introduce the 20 fundamental Ayurvedic qualities, laying the foundation for understanding holistic health.
-
Class 8 chapters focus on Dinacharya (daily routines) and Ritucharya (seasonal discipline), emphasizing how lifestyle and environment affect well-being.
These updates go beyond textbooks — they aim to reconnect students with India’s ancient scientific heritage and encourage a balanced approach to modern science and traditional wisdom.
UGC and AYUSH Ministry Collaborate for Higher Education
The UGC and the Ministry of AYUSH are jointly developing modules to include Ayurveda concepts in medical and higher education syllabi.
AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav stated that Allopathy and AYUSH systems are complementary, not competitive, and the goal is to create an integrated healthcare model.
This expansion at the college level will not only reconnect students with traditional wisdom but also support the government’s mission to bring Ayurveda to the global stage.
NEP 2020: Focus on Indian Knowledge Systems
This transformation echoes the spirit of NEP 2020, which aims to bridge modern education with India’s indigenous knowledge traditions.
By integrating Ayurveda into school science, NCERT hopes to inspire respect for ancient wisdom, while nurturing health-conscious and responsible citizens for the future.
